Family Dentistry

familydentistOne of the treatment areas our West Salem office is most proud to offer is the care of your children. We take great pride in having a positive influence in the care of your child and making their visits to Dr. Shih as enjoyable as possible, without any fears or concerns.

Remember to bring your little one in for their first dental checkup by the time their first tooth comes in – usually around 12 months!

First Visit

It is our recommendation to bring your child to Waterloo Heights Dental Center at age one for their first visit. Because dental problems often start early, the sooner the visit the better. To safeguard against problems such as baby bottle tooth decay, teething irritations, gum disease, and prolonged thumb sucking, we can provide or recommend special preventive care.

We realize each and every child is different and every child must be treated as an individual. On their first visit to our office we will sit down with both of you and discuss your dental needs and if you have any questions or concerns about their oral health. We will review their previous medical history and ask you about their dental home care and diet.

Every child has his or her own comfort level. We do not push any treatment unless your child is emotionally ready. Dr. Shih will then examine your child each time they have their teeth cleaned.

Please feel free at any time to ask questions concerning your child’s oral health; we are more than happy to answer your questions. Our entire dental team, and our West Salem office are committed to providing a relaxed, non-threatening environment for your child.

Tooth Sealants

A sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth – premolars and molars. The plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaque and acids.Sealants are easy to apply and only take a few minutes to seal each tooth. The teeth that will be sealed are cleaned, then the chewing surfaces are conditioned to help the sealant adhere to the tooth. The sealant is then painted into the pits and fissures and hardened with a special curing light.

Contact us at our West Salem office today to schedule an appointment for your children to come for a dental check-up or to have their teeth sealed.
